Crazy Hybrids Are The New Normal — The Carmudgeon Show w/ Jason Cammisa & Derek Tam-Scott — Ep 152
It's not just Bugatti - we're seeing a shift away from pedestrian turbocharged engines and toward hybrids with an amazing engine as the centerpiece.

There's a bunch of amazing stuff coming - but sadly nothing for enthusiasts who don't have unlimited funds.
Lamborghini has two new powertrains: a hybrid V-12 for the Revuelto and a 10,000-rpm V-8 for the Huracan replacement. Aston is developing a new V-12. The GMA T.50 and T.30 and Aston Valkyrie use a Cosworth V-12; the Bugatti Tourbillon uses a 9500-rpm Cosworth V-16. The Porsche 992.2 GTS uses an amazing hybrid turbocharged 3.6-liter flat-six.
What's happening in the car market? First, there's a discussion of who buys new cars? How old are car buyers? And how old is the average car on the road?
And why Hybrids all of a sudden?
What's happening is that manufacturers are realizing that a high-revving, vocal combustion engine is what customers want. And a plug-in hybrid system allows this to happen while passing emissions legislation.
All this and more in a very, very curmudgeonly episode of the Carmudgeon Show.

My fiancée and I bought a used 2021 Launch Edition Polestar 2 as our daily driver and we love it. The performance pack adds Ohlins dampers and BIG brembos to already great chassis dynamics, and makes it a real M3 competitor IMO. We've put 36,000 miles on it in 6 months, no issues whatsoever. Absolutely superb.

Having owned a manual M52 swapped E36 compact, this is the answer. Extremely fun in the twisties (like a more powerful E30), massive hatch (could fit set(s) of wheels or an engine in the back, super light, and cost nothing to own. Mine was modified further and had the interior removed because my intention was a strictly canyon carver and it could keep up with a Nismo 370z that made probably 120whp more.

My car insurance for a used car back in 2013 was 230a month (i was 22). So considering how fucked the insurance industry is right now, 500 a month unfortunately doesn't surprise me, but it is unthinkable considering people can't really justify it. Insurance companies do actually want us to bundle our policies however, which does make it much cheaper. My GF new ioniq 5 was going to be 350 for her to start a new policy, but bundled with my old car it was 225 for both cars (my car was only 45 with minimum coverage)...i don't understand. 🙈🙈

i know a LOT of ppl think they need more car than they actually need, but at the other end of the spectrum, i don't think it's fair to expect ppl who'd have traditionally bought a hot-hatch, to gravitate towards a BRZ. i can't haul kayaks on a convertible top and they don't sell trailer hitches for GR86s.

How about the drivers who slow down going uphill where passing is not allowed, but then speed up going downhill where you would have to go much faster than the limit to pass? If your speed is all over the place regardless of the limit, you may be a bad driver.

This is the reality that I've been thinking about for a while now.....cars are becoming less and less interesting, and with EVs now coming in, even less interesting....and although they are quick in a straight line....this is actually only one small topic to talk about.....what are journalists going to get us excited about in the future....I'm so glad I grew up in the best era ever for the automobile...(last 30 years).....each year, new and interesting cars were released with ....variety of engines, variety of drivetrains, a good blend of tech and engineering......all this is now just a big computer on wheels with no emotion......I need to start buying up more old cars for fun....

It is telling that ALL the car ads I get on YT while watching this enthusiast podcast, and a watch history of enthusiast and racing cars, is STILL only KIA Sorentos, Mazda CX50s, and CRVs. What a pathetic time to be a car enthusiast. Import / buy old guys, it is your only hope.

  • @ChaosphereIX
    @ChaosphereIX День тому

Yeah I live in old car land too. Nothing new appeals at all to me as an enthusiast, or is unobtainable. I refuse to be an NPC with a Rav4. My commuter is a Volt. It is a fantastic appliance yet drives like the low car it is. GM should still be making it. My summer car is an Alfa Romeo with a Busso. With a manual. I would have bought a new Giulia QV (went to the dealer and everything, ready to spend all of my money) but even Alfa don't put a manual in any of their cars anymore, so no sale. So I will continue to live in old car land with the other true enthusiasts, and all the new cars will continue to be bought by old people or families, and thus will continue to be increasingly focused on that demographic.

Something that has not been covered is the sub par performance of EVs. Last year they could not get within 32% of the advertised range. This year it has improved so that you are only screwed 22% - the cars on average get 78% of the range advertised. The Ricardo survey showed that the break even point on CO2 for EVs is 8 years! And remember that is only CO2, everyone is ignoring the massive pollution and acid rain caused by the mining of the materials for the batteries, they ignore the CO2 increases caused by sending the stuff around the world twice, and you have to ignore that the mining is done by slave labour. Not something LIKE slavery but actual slavery itself. So some fool who bought into the hype, bought a Tesla and changes it every 3 years will NEVER breakeven. Maybe that is why CO2 levels are not falling?

Things I observe on my workday Autobahn commutes and the small portions in the cities: -blocking the middle lane for absolutely no reason (overtaking on the right is prohibited) -blocking the left lane for no reason -braking right in front of a radar control even though they weren't speeding at all -passing by a traffic jam on the exit to merge just at the last possible moment, resulting in near-collisions -never using turn signals -using a roundabout totally wrong (turn signals...) -using two parking spots, be it roadside or parking lot -driving with your blinding rear fog light on

I tend to agree on Jason's take with Icons. New cars generally grow big and fat (looking at you BMW) and creep even further from financial reach - which doesn't seem possible looking at today's prices but that's the sad truth. Buy a Giulia QV or Alpine A110? Better have some deeeeeep pockets.

Among the reasons I keep driving my 2010 RAV4 is that nothing newer does the jobs I need better enough to justify the prices. Another is all the new tech being shoehorned into everything whether you need/want it or not. I don't want a back up camera or blind spot sensors, I want to be able to see out of my car. I don't need lane assist or adaptive cruise control; none of that shit makes driving better, it just makes it easier for idiots who can't be bothered to learn how to drive correctly. I don't want a big screen (touch or not) because I'm not watching movies while I'm driving. I bought a new motorcycle a few months ago and chose the base model specifically because the higher trims have a more obnoxious dash screen with more colors and pointless settings to ignore... As for EVs, if they work for you, great! Enjoy them! At least once per month I drive farther than any electric can drive on a single charge, including towing my bike to the track. I tow from Tulsa, OK to Birmingham, AL for Barber and Austin, TX for COTA at least once each per year, plus just going to Hallett which is only 45 miles away 4-6 times per year. Until the battery and charging tech can refill it at least close enough to refilling my gas tank (10 minutes or less), EVs don't work for me. I'm already driving 8-12 hours; I'm not even slightly interested in adding another 6-8 hours each way for charging. I also know I'm an outlier. For sporty cars I could get a GR Corolla or BRZ or Miata RF or whatever it's called for $40,000, or I can pick up a 10-20 year old MR2 or NC Miata for $5-10,000. The only tough part of that choice is picking which one I want the most in the color I loke the most. Especially if it's going to be a track beater. I don't buy cars hoping to sell them later for a profit; I buy them because I want to drive them or because they fill some need I expect to have long enough that an occasional rental isn't viable.

Young people aren't buying new cars because they can barely afford rent and food, let alone entertainment and fun cars. The world is only realistically affordable by older folks with a nest egg at the moment.
